Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola is unhappy about the Eurovision Song Contest. Because the international music competition will be held in Liverpool on Saturday, the Premier League game between Everton FC and Manchester City has to take place on Sunday for security reasons. The ESC will take place from May 9th to 13th in the 11,000-seat Liverpool Arena, around six kilometers from Everton’s Goodison Park stadium. This leaves Manchester City one day less to prepare for the Champions League second leg against Real Madrid. Madrid are already playing Getafe in the Spanish league on Saturday.
“I don’t understand it, but I don’t want to fight anymore,” Guardiola said at the matchday press conference on Friday. Before the second duel with the royals, his team “doesn’t have much time, thank you for that. Apparently sometimes two important events cannot happen side by side. We would have preferred to play on Saturday. You have to adapt, what else can we do?”
Guardiola assumes that his players in the premier class will still go to their limit and call on all their reserves in the second leg. “If you think you’re exhausted and you can’t do it anymore, you can,” said the 52-year-old, who won the Champions League twice as a coach with FC Barcelona. “You can be tired, that’s normal. But at the same time, if you have the will, you can have incredible energy.”
Manchester City still has a chance of a treble this season. Guardiola’s side, led by star striker Erling Haaland, are leaders in the Premier League and are also in the final of the FA Cup. However, the longing for a trophy is greatest in the Champions League, because the Citizens have never won this competition before.
