Portugal’s Quest for Victory: A Look Ahead to Euro 2024

Eight years after its title at Euro 2016, Portugal will try to seek victory again in Germany during this Euro 2024 which will take place from June 14 to July 14. Expected to be among the favorites along with France, England, Germany and even Spain, Portugal has the merit of arriving in good shape. With 10 victories in 10 qualifying matches, certainly in a weak group, against Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Liechtenstein, the Lusitanians arrive with full confidence.

With a squad fairly close to that used during the 2022 World Cup where veterans Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe play extra time, Portugal can boast of having a high quality team with players referenced on each line like Ruben Dias ( Manchester City) and Joao Cancelo (FC Barcelona) in defense, Vitinha (Paris Saint-Germain) and Bernardo Silva (Manchester City) in midfield or even Rafael Leao (AC Milan) and João Félix (FC Barcelona) in attack. Quality at every position and crazy bench depth for Roberto Martinez.

Young people emerging

Experienced players, executives, but also rising youth in the team since we can note the presence of Antonio Silva (20 years old), Gonçalo Inacio (22 years old), Nuno Mendes (21 years old), Joao Neves ( 19 years old), Gonçalo Ramos (22 years old) or even Francisco Conceição (21 years old) within this Portuguese team. It is also an opportunity to see new emerging faces who will proudly wear the colors of the Seleção das Quinas for many years to come.

Among the main absentees are Bruma (Braga) and Matheus Nunes (Manchester City). Claiming victory, Portugal will be the big favorite in its group F which includes the Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia. A draw reminiscent of Euro 2008 where the Portuguese finished in first place (with Georgia instead of Switzerland). The Portuguese will begin their tournament on Tuesday June 18 at 9 p.m. against the Czech Republic then will cross swords with Turkey on Saturday June 22 at 6 p.m. Finally, Portugal’s last group stage match will take place on Wednesday June 26 at 9 p.m. against Georgia.
