Seven Argentines Reach Quarterfinals at Villa María Challenger

Seven of the eight players remaining in the AAT Challenger IEB+ at Villa María are Argentine, Infobae reported, leaving Spain’s Oriol Roca Batalla as the only foreigner in the quarterfinals of the last Challenger held in Argentina this year.

The tournament runs from Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 8 on the brick dust courts of the Sport Social Club in Villa María, Córdoba, and offers $60,000 in prize money, with the champion earning 50 ATP ranking points, according to the Municipalidad de Villa María. It is the eighth Challenger of the season in Argentina, the sixth organized by the Asociación Argentina de Tenis (AAT), and the fourth time the IEB+ circuit has stopped in Villa María, drawing 50 players from around the world.

The quarterfinal bracket: seven locals, one Spaniard

The seven Argentines in the quarterfinals are Federico Coria, Juan Manuel La Serna, Carlos Zárate, Nicolás Kicker, Juan Pablo Ficovich, Juan Bautista Torres and Genaro Olivieri, Infobae reported. All four Friday matchups are set:

  • Coria (No. 831) faces Ficovich (No. 370). Coria defeated compatriot Valerio Aboian (No. 258) 6-4, 6-4, while Ficovich beat Bolivia’s Murkel Dellien (No. 450) 6-0, 6-4.
  • Olivieri (No. 257), the second seed, faces Torres (No. 314). Olivieri beat Ignacio Monzón (No. 578) 6-3, 6-1, and Torres defeated the Netherlands’ Ryan Nijboer (No. 384) 6-3, 6-4.
  • Top seed La Serna (No. 254) faces Zárate (No. 341).
  • Kicker (No. 340) faces Roca Batalla (No. 290), the only non-Argentine left in the main draw.

DeporTV reported that Kicker, the 2022 champion at this venue, opened his campaign with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Brazil’s Bruno Fernández (No. 553) in 2 hours, 17 minutes, while Zárate of Corrientes beat fellow Argentine Gonzalo Villanueva (No. 325) 6-3, 7-6(4) in 1 hour, 39 minutes.

Federico Coria’s deadline: a title in Argentina or retirement

Much of the attention at the Sport Social Club has centered on Coria, the 34-year-old from Santa Fe ranked No. 831, Infobae reported. He is chasing a sixth Challenger title — and his first in Argentina — to extend his professional career, having announced that if he does not win a title before February 2027, he will retire from tennis.

Coria’s 6-4, 6-4 victory over Aboian kept that goal alive and set up Friday’s all-Argentine quarterfinal against Ficovich.

La Serna’s emotional win over a friend

Top seed La Serna also advanced, though his route was far bumpier. Diario Inforama reported that La Serna defeated compatriot Mateo Del Pino 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 in a closely contested match, after which the two friends shared a warm embrace at the net — a moment that drew attention beyond the score. La Serna wants to make history at the last Challenger of the year and climb the ATP rankings.

Villa María’s place in Challenger history

DeporTV noted that Villa María debuted on the Challenger circuit in 2022, when Kicker — a native of Merlo, Buenos Aires province — won the title. The trophy then went to Camilo Ugo Carabelli and, most recently, to the American Emilio Nava. This year’s edition closes a record Argentine season that included eight Challengers across the country, six of them organized by the AAT, according to the Municipalidad de Villa María.

Davis Cup ambitions in the Anfiteatro

The tournament’s presentation also surfaced a bigger ambition for the city. Agustín Calleri, president of the AAT and of the Agencia Córdoba Deportes, said during the official launch that the Municipal Anfiteatro could host a Davis Cup tie, Canal Showsport reported. Calleri said he looked at the amphitheater and concluded a Davis Cup could be played there, adding that Villa María has the infrastructure, hotel capacity and dining to host an event of that scale.

Mayor Eduardo Accastello backed the idea, saying that if the draw gives Argentina a home tie in 2027, the municipality will work after the Festival Internacional de Peñas to adapt the Anfiteatro so the Davis Cup can be played in Villa María, according to the Municipalidad de Villa María and Canal Showsport.

Friday’s quarterfinals decide an all-Argentine semifinal

If the four Argentine favorites — Coria, Olivieri, La Serna and Kicker — all win on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday will be entirely Argentine for the first time at this event, Infobae reported. The only thing standing between the hosts and that sweep is Roca Batalla, the fourth seed, who must beat Kicker to keep a foreign player alive in the draw.
