Nearly 200 original artifacts tied to some of the biggest names in Spanish and international sport went on display Thursday at the Las Arenas shopping center in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, in an exhibition that runs free of charge through Nov. 15, laprovincia.es reported. The show, called Leyendas del Deporte, is part of the lead-up programming for ExpoDeca 2026, the third edition of which is scheduled for Nov. 12–15 around the Plaza de la Música and the Auditorio Alfredo Kraus.
The centerpiece items include the boots Andrés Iniesta wore when he scored the goal that gave Spain the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, a pair of shoes used by Usain Bolt at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games, and a jersey from Miguel Induráin’s Banesto team.
Iniesta’s 2010 final boots headline a Spanish football section
One wing of the exhibition is devoted to the history of the Spanish national football team. Alongside Iniesta’s boots and the ball from his extra-time winner in the 2010 World Cup final, visitors can see a commemorative shirt from Spain’s 12–1 victory over Malta in 1983, the result that sealed qualification for the UEFA Euro 1984.
The display also covers three Olympic torches from Games with Spanish ties: Mexico City 1968, Barcelona 1992 and Athens 2004.
Gasol, Nadal and Spain’s golf greats share the floor
Basketball is represented through material belonging to brothers Pau and Marc Gasol, while tennis equipment used by Rafa Nadal and Manolo Santana is also on show. Golf items come from José María Olazábal, Sergio García and Severiano Ballesteros.
Women’s sport has its own space, with objects linked to Vero Boquete, the former Spain captain who became the country’s first female Ballon d’Or nominee, as well as material from badminton Olympic champion Carolina Marín and race walker María Pérez.
From Fermín Cacho to Eliud Kipchoge in the athletics hall
The athletics section gathers pieces connected to Ruth Beitia, Sandra Myers, Jesús García Bragado, Fermín Cacho and Javier Moracho, plus the shoes of world-record holders Mike Powell in the long jump and Javier Sotomayor in the high jump. The show also references the marks both athletes set and displays the shirt Eliud Kipchoge wore when he set the marathon world record in Berlin in 2022.
Bolt’s footwear from Rio 2016, where he again won the sprint events, sits in this same international athletics area.
Showcasing motorsport’s legendary vehicles
Motorsport equipment includes items from Formula 1 drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, Marc Gené, motorcycle racers Toni Bou and Ángel Nieto. Among the largest pieces are a 125cc Aprilia belonging to Jorge Martínez Aspar and a Ferrari Formula 1 single-seater from the 2017 season, the year Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen drove for the team.
Highlighting global athletes’ treasured possessions
The international section broadens the roster: football objects linked to Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappé, Neymar and Erling Haaland; basketball items from NBA stars Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant; and tennis material from Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz.
QR-code audio guides voiced by veteran Spanish journalists
The exhibition is rounded out with photographs, videos and audio guides accessed through QR codes. The guides feature sports journalists José María García, María Escario, José Ramón de la Morena, Paloma del Río and Antonio Lobato.
Two more exhibitions ride along with ExpoDeca 2026
Leyendas del Deporte is not the only display at Las Arenas. A second space is dedicated to the Canary Islands’ traditional games and sports, gathering modalities tied to the archipelago’s cultural and sporting heritage. A third, prepared with the Gran Canaria Automobile Museum, focuses on classic rally cars, tracing different stages of motorsport history through vehicles used in or linked to competition.
All three exhibitions stay open during ExpoDeca, whose main program runs Nov. 12–15 and is expected to bring together more than 400 activities, around 50 sports modalities, talks and exhibition spaces in the Plaza de la Música area.
