Mexican archers Maya Becerra and Ángela Ruiz secured podium finishes at the Swiss Open Lausanne in Switzerland, according to coverage from La Jornada. Becerra claimed the gold medal in the women’s compound event, while Ruiz earned a bronze medal in the women’s Olympic recurve division at the opening event of the Indoor World Series circuit.
The competition brought together 379 athletes from 30 countries at the World Archery Excellence Centre, where matches were contested indoors over an 18-meter distance, Vanguardia reported. For Mexico’s delegation, the tournament delivered immediate success on the international indoor circuit.
Becerra Dominates Compound Division in Lausanne
Maya Becerra added another international title to her resume by winning the women’s compound gold medal. In the final match, the Mexican archer defeated India’s Priya Gurjar. Italy’s Francesca Aloisi rounded out the podium by capturing the bronze medal.
The victory follows Becerra’s strong international form earlier in the year. She previously won the compound title at the Antalya World Cup stop in June, establishing herself among the world’s top competitors in the discipline.
Ruiz Navigates Tiebreaks to Secure Bronze
Ángela Ruiz earned her spot on the podium after a demanding elimination bracket in the women’s recurve event. The Saltillo native finished the qualification round in third place overall with 584 points, trailing the Netherlands’ Gaby Schloesser, who scored 586, and fellow Mexican Ana Paula Vázquez, who also tallied 584 points based on higher-value scoring rings, according to Vanguardia.
During the elimination rounds, Ruiz advanced past Turkey’s Hayru Nisa Ergün and Spain’s Natalia Manjarrez by identical 6-2 margins. Her path to the final stalled in the semifinals against Moldova’s Alexandra Mirca. After a 5-5 tie through five sets, the semifinal forced a single-arrow shoot-off. Both archers scored a 10, but Mirca placed her arrow closer to the center to take the victory 6-5.

Ruiz rebounded in the third-place match against Gaby Schloesser. Another tense battle ended tied, requiring a final shoot-off arrow. Ruiz struck a 10 while Schloesser managed a 9, securing the bronze medal for the Mexican competitor. The result made Ruiz the sole representative from the state of Coahuila to medal at the Swiss event.
Vázquez Reaches Quarterfinals in Recurve
Ana Paula Vázquez also featured prominently in the women’s recurve bracket. After posting a strong qualification score of 584 points to finish second overall, Vázquez advanced through the early rounds before her tournament ended in the quarterfinals.
Vázquez was eliminated in the round of eight by Alexandra Mirca of Moldova. Mirca ultimately continued through the bracket to face Switzerland’s Olivia Doigo in the final, securing the recurve gold medal with a victory over the host-nation competitor.
