In the 24-second clip, a young female participant successfully executes a drop seoi-nage throw on the three-time Olympic champion, prompting Nomura to perform a fluid ukemi breakfall. The girl reacts with visible astonishment, placing both hands over her mouth in delight while children in the background eagerly raise their hands to participate.

The clip began circulating widely on X after a user reposted it on October 28. By the following day, view counts climbed steadily, prompting the retired athlete to address the unexpected online revival directly on his official social media account.

Nomura dominated the men’s 60kg division by capturing gold medals at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney, and 2004 Athens Olympic Games, becoming the first Asian judoka to achieve a three-peat in individual competition. Following his retirement from competitive sport, he transitioned into television broadcasting and launched nationwide youth outreach programs.

Reflecting on the viral archive footage, Nomura stated that the interaction in France served as a pivotal catalyst for his grassroots initiatives. He noted that the experience inspired him to independently produce youth clinics, leading to the creation of the Nomura Dojo project in 2019.

“This judo class in France was one of the moments that made me realize anew the wonderful nature of judo and sparked my desire to produce my own workshops,” Nomura wrote on X. He emphasized that the brief video encapsulates the core values of the sport, describing how judo transcends age and national boundaries while fostering mutual respect and the spirit of etiquette.

Public Response and Nationwide Outreach Continue

Social media users flooded the post with enthusiastic commentary, praising the technical execution of the breakfall and the joyful atmosphere of the session. Observers highlighted how elite competitors demonstrate mastery through safe ukemi, while others expressed admiration for the respectful etiquette modeled during the youth exchange.

Nomura maintains an active schedule travelling across Japan to deliver lectures and host youth clinics based on his competitive career in martial arts.
