Korea Archery Association trains 25 teachers for school programs

The Korea Archery Association is expanding its footprint in South Korea’s physical education curriculum, launching a specialized training course for 25 teachers in the North Chungcheong province. The initiative, scheduled for August 29, aims to equip instructors with the technical skills necessary to manage archery programs in schools that lack dedicated professional coaches.

Training at Wonbong Middle School

The upcoming session will take place at the gymnasium of Wonbong Middle School in Cheongju. Running from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time, the program is part of the broader 2026 Strategic Sports Project, which receives financial backing from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Sports Promotion Corporation. According to the federation, the course is designed to improve teachers’ understanding of the sport, enabling them to lead sessions directly for students.

The participant cohort includes 15 primary school teachers, nine middle school teachers, and one instructor from a special education facility. This training follows a similar model implemented on April 14, 2026, at the Hongseong Girls’ Middle School in South Chungcheong, where 33 educators completed a comparable curriculum.

Integration of Theory and Practical Instruction

The curriculum emphasizes both the historical context of archery and hands-on equipment management. Teachers will receive instruction on basic shooting postures and the practical operation of equipment used in school physical education settings. By focusing on these fundamental competencies, the federation intends to ensure that schools can offer archery as a viable physical activity even in the absence of specialized athletic training staff.

National Scope of School Archery

Currently, archery instruction is integrated into the physical education programs of approximately 240 primary, middle, and high schools across South Korea. The federation’s strategy involves balancing the introduction of archery as a general student experience with the long-term objective of identifying and nurturing future talent. This dual approach was evidenced by the 2026 National School Sports Club Archery Championship for Elementary Schools, held on July 4 at the Seongam Cultural and Sports Center at Namseoul University in Cheonan.

That tournament featured 297 student-athletes from 20 schools competing in mixed team events at a distance of 7 meters. The program also included practical recurve archery clinics led by Olympic medalists Yoon Mi-jin and Yoon Hye-young, providing students with exposure to professional-level guidance. The federation plans to continue these regional teacher training sessions as part of its ongoing effort to increase the number of schools offering archery, thereby broadening the base of student participation nationwide.
