Nvidia’s $10B Kazakhstan Bet: Jensen Huang’s Strategic Move to Build a Global AI Super-Hub

Presidential Meeting and State Honors

Huang arrived to a reception that included a traditional Kazakh robe presented by local residents before heading to the presidential palace for closed-door discussions with Tokayev that lasted several hours. Following the meeting, Huang was awarded the Order of Friendship, one of the nation’s highest honors recognizing international cooperation. Representatives from the International Judo Federation subsequently presented Huang with a gold-embroidered black belt during the visit.

The Ekibastuz Data Center Valley Project

The diplomatic engagements served as a prelude to an afternoon appearance at the Alem.AI International Artificial Intelligence Center alongside Madiyev, who holds the rank of deputy prime minister and Minister of Digital Development and Aerospace Industry. Huang announced that NVIDIA, in partnership with United States-based infrastructure firm Firebird, will develop an ultra-large-scale data center valley in Ekibastuz.

The initial phase of the project carries an investment of 10 billion USD and aims to house 100,000 NVIDIA graphics processing units, utilizing current GB300 chips and the forthcoming Vera Rubin architecture. Firebird secured United States export clearance enabling an initial delivery of 45,000 Grace Blackwell chips directly to Kazakhstan. The initial 50-megawatt computing facility is scheduled for commercial operation by mid-2027, with long-term expansion targets scaling capacity to 300 megawatts, 1 gigawatt, and eventually 5 gigawatts.

Local Investments and Autonomous Vehicle Testing

Alongside the infrastructure project, NVIDIA extended direct investment to Kazakh artificial intelligence startup Higgsfield AI. In the autonomous vehicle sector, Pony.ai finalized an operational agreement with local mobility platform inDrive to conduct road trials of seventh-generation robotaxis on the streets of Astana.

Energy Economics and Geopolitical Positioning

Ekibastuz, situated atop vast proven coal reserves, offers low-cost coal-fired electricity production capable of sustaining continuous power demands for tens of thousands of high-performance GPUs. Kazakhstan’s low population density, vast land area, and cold climate provide natural cooling advantages that reduce thermal management overhead for high-density computing clusters.

The location also provides strategic proximity to the East Asian technology market while operating under regulatory frameworks distinct from direct shipments to restricted jurisdictions. Government officials have elevated artificial intelligence development to a national strategic priority, streamlining tax and land allocation policies to support foreign technology infrastructure investment.
