SportCity Day Returns to Catania: Free Sports Activities on September 20

Catania is preparing to transform public parks, beaches, and urban spaces into an open-air athletic hub for the sixth SportCity Day on Sunday, September 20. Promoted nationally by the Fondazione SportCity in collaboration with the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) alongside local sporting associations ASD Terre di Sport and Nova Sport, the event aims to bring physical activity directly into the community.

Parco Famà Serves as Main Urban Hub

The primary venue for this year’s citywide activation is Parco Famà, located on viale Raffaello Sanzio opposite Parco Falcone. Opened last year and managed by AMTS under the municipal “Catania Spazio Sport” initiative, the park features a dedicated calisthenics area that will anchor a broad array of public demonstrations and introductory sessions.

Visitors can sample a wide range of athletic disciplines throughout the day. The schedule spans volleyball, badminton, sports dance, track and field athletics, crossfit, gymnastics, Nordic walking, and soft air, designed to accommodate participants of all age groups.

Water Sports and Coastal Activities at La Plaia

In addition to the inland park setting, Catania maintains a secondary coastal hub at the “Le Capannine” facility along La Plaia. This waterfront location shifts the focus toward aquatic and sand-based disciplines.

The litorale program includes surfing, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), beach volleyball, beach tennis, and traditional tamburello games. By utilizing both urban green spaces and coastal venues, the city offers participants a comprehensive look at both terrestrial and marine sports.

Regional Leadership and National Scope

Sicily stands out as the region with the highest number of adhesions for the event. More than 30 local municipalities across the island have signed on for SportCity Day, contributing to a national footprint that spans over 200 locations under the banner of the “Republic of Movement.”

“Catania, as always, will honor this day,” said Giuseppe Leanza, the referent of the Fondazione SportCity in Sicily. Leanza expressed appreciation to the municipal administration and AMTS President Salvatore Vittorio for supporting the local coordination.

Upcoming Sicilian Sports Events

The partnership between the Fondazione SportCity and Sicilian organizers extends well beyond the September 20 gathering. Regional calendars already highlight several dates scheduled for 2027, including the “SportCity EDU Etna” educational and academic sports summit slated for April across Nicolosi and Pedara, a regional meeting in Syracuse during June, and an October Etna Camp, alongside the seventh SportCity Day.
