Rakan Al Thani was detained by law enforcement officials at Munich Airport while trying to catch a flight bound for Doha, Qatar. The arrest was executed under a European arrest warrant triggered by Spanish judicial authorities, who allege severe financial mismanagement during the family’s tenure running Málaga CF.

According to the sources, investigators allege that Rakan Al Thani, who served on the board of directors for Málaga CF, engaged in the misappropriation of club funds amounting to millions of euros. The warrant details multiple charges, including unlawful appropriation, breach of trust, document forgery, and fraud.

Wider Legal Case Involving the Al Thani Family

The legal scrutiny extends well beyond Rakan Al Thani. Spanish prosecutors have filed charges against multiple members of the family, including his father, Scheich Abdullah bin Hamad Al Thani, his brothers Nasser and Nayef, and five former administrative employees of the football club. For the family members, prosecutors are pressing for prison sentences of 14 years and six months, alongside an 18-year prohibition on managing commercial enterprises.

The judicial process in Spain stalled significantly in October 2022, when the Al Thani family failed to appear for a scheduled court summons in Málaga. Court officials noted that the defendants had neither appointed legal representation nor responded to electronic communications regarding the proceedings. Citing the gravity of the accusations and the substantial prison terms involved, presiding Judge María Ángeles Ruiz González ruled that a severe flight risk existed, prompting the issuance of European arrest warrants in July.

Impact on Málaga CF’s Sporting Decline

Under the ownership and management of the Al Thani family, the club experienced a dramatic operational and financial collapse. After the leadership ceased funding operations, the club was forced into a massive sell-off of players and academy prospects. The financial instability ultimately drove the historic Spanish club downward through the divisions, culminating in relegation to Spain’s third tier. In 2020, a Spanish court intervened and stripped Al Thani of administrative control over the organization.
