Jack Conan to Miss November Tests Due to Shoulder Injury

Ireland back row Jack Conan will miss the November Nations Championship games in Dublin after sustaining a shoulder injury earlier this month while playing for Leinster, according to reports from BBC Sport and Yahoo Sports.

Shoulder Injury Sidelines Conan for November Tests

The 34-year-old Bray native picked up the injury during Leinster’s 48-23 Champions Cup victory over Clermont after scoring a try. The setback rules him out of Ireland’s upcoming November Nations Championship games against Argentina, Fiji, and South Africa in Dublin. Conan, who has earned 62 caps since making his international debut in 2015, is aiming to return to fitness for next year’s Six Nations and has set his sights on featuring at the 2027 Rugby World Cup next October.

Conan’s mother, Ann, died in August. Striving to regain full fitness and enjoy his rugby serves as a way to honor her memory.

She used to text me before every single game and say ‘good luck, we’re proud’. That’s all she ever said. That’s a big thing for me now, enjoy it and make her proud. Take the stresses as a good thing and that’s what I want to do.

Culture Shift Under Head Coach Andy Farrell

Throughout his international career, Conan has largely played under head coach Andy Farrell. Farrell was promoted to the top role in 2019 after serving as a defense coach during Joe Schmidt’s tenure. Conan credited Farrell with shifting the squad’s culture to encourage open communication about feelings, which he believes has strengthened team bonds and helped newer players integrate faster.

Before the change, players often felt nervous and hesitant to share emotions publicly during team meetings, according to Conan. Farrell’s approach explicitly welcomes vulnerability, creating an environment where asking questions or admitting uncertainty is accepted.

I want you to be open and say how you are feeling whether it’s good or bad, no wrong answers.

Retirement Timeline and Drive to Compete

While acknowledging he is in the twilight of his career, the two-time British and Irish Lion feels physically and mentally capable of continuing. He stated that he will only weigh retirement once he feels his competitive edge has vanished.

Rehab sessions on a stationary bike present challenging moments, but his underlying motivation remains intact. Whether he continues playing for one, two, or three more years is not yet clear, though his competitive drive persists.

I get a bit sick other lads are playing – it spurs me on which I think is healthy. I still want to compete.

While the exact timeline for his eventual retirement remains uncertain, his burning desire to keep playing at the highest level ensures he will remain focused on his recovery.
