Olympique de Marseille president Stéphane Richard has delivered a stark warning regarding the club’s financial stability, stating publicly that the French Ligue 1 club is facing a “survival risk” and urging supporters to accept a period of transition.
Financial Realities and the Threat to Marseille’s Future
The warning came during the Tangram Talks event organized by club partner CMA CGM, where Stéphane Richard addressed the growing anxiety among supporters following a difficult summer transfer window and a slow start to the season. According to reports from regional and national outlets, the club president did not sugarcoat the gravity of the economic situation facing a French football institution.
“When you have a company that can lose more than 50% of its turnover, you can say that it is at risk,” Stéphane Richard said during the event. “It is at risk of survival, it is also at risk athletically. We have examples around us: the Girondins de Bordeaux. Those who think that OM is immortal because it is OM are wrong.”
A Transition Season and Shifting Strategic Priorities
With finances constrained, Marseille’s immediate ambitions on the pitch are set to be scaled back. Stéphane Richard outlined a deliberate strategy for the medium term, pointing to the 2026–2027 season as the foundation for a complete club reconstruction. “I consider that the 2026–2027 season is the one where we lay the foundations of this reconstruction, which is going to be a transition season. It might not necessarily be exciting, but that doesn’t mean we’ll be bad,” he noted.
The leadership shift—following Richard’s arrival at the club earlier in the year—has also brought a distinct pivot in operational philosophy. Without naming his predecessor directly, Richard suggested that former leadership had prioritized immediate squad acquisitions over sustainable academy development. He argued that the club had missed having sufficient administrative and financial managers at the helm during past transfer windows.

Despite acknowledging the pervasive anxiety among the fanbase, the leadership maintained that collective backing remains vital as the team navigates its current sporting and economic hurdles. “We are worried. I hear that every day. And ‘so what?’ Me too, I’m worried. You still have to come to the stadium. You still have to support us,” Richard told attendees at the CMA CGM gathering.
