The Bremen Dockers secured a 7-3 victory over the Braunschweig 89ers in the opening game of their promotion round semifinal series in the German Baseball-Bundesliga, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three matchup at the Henschenbusch grounds.
Playing in front of traveling fans who made the trip with a live stream crew, Bremen relied on a strong outing from starting pitcher Edvardas Matusevicius. Matusevicius kept the Braunschweig offense quiet through the early frames, while the Dockers’ defense and pitching held firm against the regular-season champions of the North-East division.
Manager Fabrizio Cagliani praised the team’s start to the series but pointed out that the offense left runs on the table. “We couldn’t have started the series any better,” Cagliani said, while noting that more production was possible at the plate.
Pitching Duel Breaks Open in the Fourth
Both starting pitchers dominated the early action. Through the first three innings, neither team managed to advance a runner across home plate as both bullpens and defenses traded quick outs.
The scoreless deadlock ended in the fourth inning when Daniel Pryne and Edvardas Matusevicius hit back-to-back singles to place runners on the bases. Despite the breakthrough, the Dockers stranded subsequent runners and failed to pad their lead further in the frame.
Late-Inning Scrambling and Defensive Control
Braunschweig found its offensive footing in the fifth inning, narrowing the deficit to 3-2 with a pair of runs. The response from Bremen was swift. Max Führling drove home two runs with a timely hit, and an additional run followed shortly after to push the Dockers’ lead to 6-2 heading into the sixth.
Matusevicius maintained control on the mound through the middle frames. In both the sixth and seventh innings, the Bremen pitcher recorded two of his three outs via strikeouts against the Braunschweig batters. Both teams added a single run in the seventh at the Fritz-Schütt-Stadion before the eighth inning passed without scoring.
Entering the final frame with a 7-3 advantage, Bremen turned to Daniel Pryne to close out the contest. With two outs recorded, Sasha Halushka secured a flyball in the outfield for the final out, sealing the four-run victory.
Series Outlook and Next Steps
The teams will meet next week in Braunschweig for Game 2 of the semifinal series. A victory for the Bremen Dockers would secure a sweep and punch their ticket to the championship final against the Solingen Alligators, who are already awaiting the winner.
Cagliani cautioned that the series remains far from decided. “Braunschweig will do everything they can to level the series,” Cagliani said. “We want to close it out and take the next step toward the championship.”
