Vargas finished the 157-game season with 33 home runs, 31 doubles, 22 stolen bases, 101 walks, 93 RBIs, and 106 runs scored, producing a .250/.363/.474 slash line. That combination of power, discipline, and speed has been achieved by only three other third basemen in the annals of Major League Baseball: Mike Schmidt with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1975, Chipper Jones with the Atlanta Braves in 1999, and José Ramírez with Cleveland in 2018.
Beyond his place in broader baseball history, the Havana native etched his name into the Chicago franchise record books. Vargas became the first player in White Sox history to accumulate at least 30 doubles, 30 home runs, 20 stolen bases, and 100 runs scored in a single season.

Within the legacy of Cuban players in the majors, Vargas joined an exclusive echelon. He is only the third player born in Cuba to combine 30 or more doubles, 30 or more home runs, 100 or more runs, and 20 or more stolen bases in a single campaign, following in the footsteps of José Canseco and Rafael Palmeiro. According to data shared by journalist Francys Romero, Canseco accomplished the feat twice with Oakland (1988 and 1991), while Palmeiro reached the thresholds with the Texas Rangers in 1993.
On September 15, when he hit his 31st home run, he moved into fifth place for the most home runs by a White Sox third baseman in a single season, trailing only Todd Frazier (40 in 2016), Robin Ventura (34 in 1996), and Bill Melton (33 in both 1970 and 1971).
All-Star breakthrough and weekly honors
The 26-year-old infielder’s stellar year included his first career selection to the MLB All-Star Game in July in Philadelphia. During the Midsummer Classic, Vargas hit a 433-foot home run, joining Frank Thomas (1995) and Magglio Ordóñez (2001) as the only White Sox players to leave the yard in the event. Vargas’s journey to the Major League elite traces back to Havana, where he played for Industriales before leaving Cuba in 2015 alongside his father, former player Lázaro Vargas. He signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in September 2017, made his MLB debut in August 2022, and subsequently moved to Chicago in a three-team trade in July 2024. After leading the White Sox in runs scored (80) and doubles (32) during his first full campaign with the club in 2025, his performance in 2026 solidified his status alongside fellow Cuban standouts Yordan Álvarez and Randy Arozarena at the top of the American League statistical leaderboard.
