Füssen, Germany – The city of Füssen recently held its 38th annual sports awards ceremony, recognizing the dedication and accomplishments of its athletes. The event, held at the Sparkasse Allgäu event hall on March 26, 2026, celebrated a wide range of sporting achievements, from individual brilliance to team success. A total of 89 bronze, 40 silver, and 44 gold medals were awarded, alongside certificates of recognition.
The ceremony highlighted the strong sporting culture within the city, as emphasized by Füssen’s Mayor Maximilian Eichstetter in his opening remarks. The evening wasn’t just about medals; it was a celebration of discipline, fairness, teamwork, and perseverance – values Eichstetter underscored as fundamental to sport.
Key Award Winners
Several athletes and teams were singled out for special recognition during the event:
- Sportswoman of the Year: Skimo racer Johanna Hiemer
- Coach of the Year: Thomas Loderer (DAV-Sektion Füssen – German Alpine Club, Füssen section)
- Youth Team of the Year: DNL-Eishockeyteam (U23 Ice Hockey Team) of EV Füssen
- Special Recognition for Services to Sport: Christian Schmid
A particularly rousing moment came with the standing ovation given to the members of the German Curling National Team – Felix Messenzehl, Benjamin Kapp, Mario Trevisiol, and Johannes Scheuerl – following their participation in the recent Winter Olympics in Italy. The Curling Club Füssen was the most successful club of the evening, securing an impressive 57 medals, followed by EV Füssen with 28 medals, and the Füssener Royal Bavarians (Baseball) in third place.
Sparkasse Allgäu’s Continued Support for Local Sport
The event also served as a platform to acknowledge the vital role of sponsors in supporting local sports. Mayor Eichstetter, along with CSU State Parliament member Andreas Kaufmann and Rochus Nickl of Sparkasse Allgäu, praised the commitment of the athletes and the organizations that enable their success. The city’s ongoing investment in sports infrastructure was also highlighted, with Eichstetter stating, “Sport is essential public services, social policy, and future policy.”
Sparkasse Allgäu’s commitment to the region’s athletic community was further demonstrated earlier this month, on March 2, 2026, with a donation of €2,500 each to the Burg Hopfen Schützenverein (shooting club) and the Musikkapelle Hopfen am Observe e.V. (Hopfen am See music society). According to Sparkasse Allgäu, these funds are specifically earmarked for youth development programs within the two organizations.
A Prunkvolle Addition to the Füssen Museum
Beyond the athlete recognition, the city of Füssen continues to invest in its cultural heritage, with a recent acquisition made possible by a generous donation from Sparkasse Allgäu. In September 2025, the bank donated €6,000 towards the purchase of a remarkable Baroque guitar from the first half of the 17th century for the Museum der Stadt Füssen. As reported by Sparkasse Allgäu, the instrument is attributed to Jacob Stadler, a significant instrument maker born in Füssen around 1585.
Füssen is historically renowned as a center for lute and violin making, and the museum already boasts an extensive collection of historical instruments. This new acquisition, restored in France and now playable, further enriches that collection. The guitar features a vaulted body made of bone and ebony shavings, and intricate inlay work. The donation was presented by Angelo Picierro, a board member of Sparkasse Allgäu, to Mayor Maximilian Eichstetter and Museum Director Dr. Isabelle Schwarz.
The city’s dedication to preserving its cultural and sporting legacy is evident in events like the annual sports awards and ongoing investments in both athletic programs and historical collections. This commitment ensures that Füssen remains a vibrant hub for both athletic achievement and cultural enrichment.
The next scheduled event for many of these athletes will be determined by their respective league and tournament schedules. Fans can stay updated on the latest news and results through the official websites of the clubs and organizations mentioned above.
