At the end of a final season bloated with episodes as long as days without bread, Stranger Things has finally given up the ghost on Netflix. Millie Bobby Brown (Onze/Eleven) took advantage of an interview to justify the choices at the end of the series.

The nostalgia marathon eighties under infusion is finally over. After stretching the concept to the breaking point and transforming 12-year-olds into thirty-somethings who still try to wear baseball caps, Stranger Things made its final point. A conclusion in the form of liberation for those who were beginning to get tired of hearing Kate Bush on repeat and references to Dungeons and Dragons.
While fans were hoping for a secret episode that would rewrite the ending, they had to make up their minds: the Ross brothers and Matt Duffer had not planned other outcomes (even this alternative ending was abandoned). While the fanbase is arguing over the quality of this epilogue, Millie Bobby Brown has stepped up to the plate. In an interview given to Netflix Tudum, the actress returned to the fate of Eleven and the narrative choices of this last farewell.
Stranger than Paradise
A little reminder of the facts. At the end of the last fight against Vecna, the Hawkins kids return home. But the bridge between the real world and the nightmare dimension remained open. Eleven therefore decides to make the Christ sacrifice and sacrifice herself to close access to our world. The young woman then disappears in a cloud of CGI, taking with her her powers and Netflix’s special effects budget. A clean, expected ending, which allows you to close the shop with a little forced tear as a bonus.
But in the epilogue of the last episode, Mike serves up a completely different version of this scene. Eleven would not have died, she would simply have faked her departure with the help of Kali/Eight to finally live in peace. According to him, she is hiding somewhere in hermit mode, far from the government’s experiments. A final twist, which unleashed passions among the fans, who have not finished debating to know whether this ending is real or not.
In the columns of TumduMillie Bobby Brown explained that, in her opinion, Eleven’s choice of permanently renounce his powers to seal the Upside Down was the only logical and human outcome for the heroine, and that this is an act “beautiful and liberating” :
“I think in this season, [Eleven] finally manages to assert herself and make a decision much more important than any she has been able to make so far. […] I find it really crucial that everything finally stops for her, that the suffering and pain end. »
And if Eleven’s death is indeed a reality, this is a rather clever way to avoid having to manage an overpowered superheroine in possible spin-offs.

We could therefore believe that this ending is canonical. Except that when we talk about the famous bucolic scene described by Mike, where Eleven would have survived and gone wandering in the open countryside, Millie Bobby Brown does not rule out the fact that this outcome could be the right one.
“I quite like this ending, the idea that Kali’s powers serve a greater purpose. Everything has a purpose, and everything is there for a specific reason. »
The Duffer brothers also do not intend to give any further explanations on the end of Stranger Things. The showrunners wanted this open ending, without a precise answer.
“For our characters to move forward and to close the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down, Eleven had to go. We found it beautiful that our characters continued to believe in this happier ending, even without having a definitive answer about its veracity. The simple fact that they believed in it seemed to us to be a much better conclusion, a fairer way to mark the end of this adventure and their passage from childhood to adulthood. »
