Twelve young Zimbabwean athletes will compete in seven disciplines at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, the first edition of the event staged in Africa, Africa24 TV reported.
The delegation includes competitors in swimming, athletics, triathlon, cycling, rowing, equestrian and judo, reflecting the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee’s aim of giving its youth a chance to measure themselves against the best in the world.
Thabani Gonye, president of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, said the athletes were there to learn, improve and carry the national flag with dignity.
Eight Summer Olympic medals set the standard
The new generation hopes to follow the figures who shaped the country’s Olympic history. Zimbabwe has won eight medals at the Summer Games — three gold, four silver and one bronze.
Among those achievements are the women’s field hockey team’s gold medal at Moscow 1980 and the seven medals won by swimmer Kirsty Coventry, including two Olympic titles.
Merit Munzwembiri, the committee’s second vice-president, warned the athletes they would face a very high level of competition from proven performers representing their countries.
Last-minute invite brings squad to 12
The team was expanded to 12 athletes with the inclusion of Ropa-fadzo Mzondo, who received a late invitation from World Athletics to run the 200 meters.
