Fans were overjoyed when Nguyen Thi Oanh and Vu Thi Trang showed up on the day.
At the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand, Nguyen Thi Oanh reaffirmed her position as one of Vietnam’s leading athletes. The girl nicknamed “Little Snail” won all three gold medals in the 5000 meters, 10,000 meters and 3000 meters steeplechase, completing a convincing hat-trick of gold medals. The achievement brought Oanh’s total number of individual gold medals at the SEA Games to a record 15, a rare milestone in the history of Vietnamese athletics.
With her unwavering fighting spirit, iron determination and ability to push her limits, Oanh once again won valuable medals and made significant contributions to the overall performance of the Vietnamese sports delegation. The image of Nguyen Thi Oanh competing at high intensity and conquering tough disciplines time and time again has become a symbol of perseverance and the silent sacrifice that top athletes often have to make.

Nguyen Thi Oanh was warmly welcomed by the fans.

Many of our children love being next to their idols.
Meanwhile, Vu Thi Trang, an experienced badminton player and partner of former Vietnamese number one Nguyen Tien Minh, also impressed at the 33rd SEA Games with her competitive spirit and professionalism. Vu Thi Trang and Bui Bich Phuong won a bronze medal in women’s doubles, the only medal for the Vietnam badminton team at the 33rd SEA Games. This marked a significant improvement from the 2023 SEA Games (where the team won nothing).
At a time when the Vietnamese badminton world needs a generational change, Vu Thi Trang’s perseverance and experience are seen as a crucial pillar, both professionally and mentally, for the younger players.

Vu Thi Trang was also welcomed in a special way.

The popularity of Vũ Thị Trang is in no way inferior to that of Nguyễn Thị Oanh.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Than Ngoc Hien said: “Out of admiration for the unwavering willpower and perseverance of the two athletes, the Organizing Committee came up with the idea of inviting Nguyen Thi Oanh and Vu Thi Trang to Ho Chi Minh City to interact with fans. At the same time, this is also a special opportunity for companies from Bac Ninh in the south to meet and encourage their compatriots.”
During the program, the two athletes candidly shared their journey to victory at the SEA Games 33, the intense pressure of top competition, the years-long preparation process and moments when they almost had to give up due to injuries, overexertion or physical limitations. These everyday, but authentic stories deeply touched the many fans in the stadium.
It is noteworthy that the Bac Ninh Business Association in the South awarded Nguyen Thi Oanh and Vu Thi Trang many valuable awards and words of encouragement, in recognition of the tireless efforts of these hometown athletes. This was not only a material encouragement, but also a great source of spiritual motivation, which further strengthened the athletes’ confidence to continue contributing to the national sport. In addition, Mr. Than Ngoc Hien and his daughter each donated VND10 million to each athlete.
“This is a small gift from my daughter and me to both of you. I hope it will encourage you to persevere and continue to bring honor to the country in general and to our hometown Bac Ninh in particular,” Mr Hien added.

The two athletes received gifts from fans and members of their local sports club.

Mr. Than Ngoc Hien, on behalf of the organizing committee, presented each athlete with VND10 million. Mr. Than Ngoc Hien is currently a physical education teacher at Nguyen Thuong Hien Primary School in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2023, he also donated a monthly salary to athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh after her success at the SEA Games 32, to honor her perseverance and inspire students.
After sharing a few interesting stories, Vu Thi Trang immediately stepped onto the badminton court to talk to the fans. Not to be outdone, Nguyen Thi Oanh unexpectedly joined her, picked up her racket and played doubles with Vu Thi Trang.
After the matches, amid loud cheers from the fans, Nguyen Thi Oanh said: “My main sport is athletics, so I spend most of my time training and competing. During my student years, I also studied and practiced badminton. That’s why I’m very happy to have been able to participate in such a competition. Even more special is that I got to play together with Trang – someone I really admire. I hope this meeting will bring a lot of fun to everyone.”
“I just wanted to give you all a quick message: I hope you all always remain passionate and love your work. At the same time, don’t forget to exercise regularly for good health,” said Nguyen Thi Oanh.
