During a brutal demolition in week 4 at the Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs crushed the Baltimore Ravens 37-20, exposing the faulty defense and the increasing injuries of the reigning champions of the North AFC.
Patrick Mahomes cut Baltimore with 270 yards and four touchdowns, while the explosive return of Xavier Worthy has rekindled the hitherto stone attack. Lamar Jackson left the field prematurely because of an elongation to the hamstrings after a loss of ball, leaving his replacement Cooper Rush trying to save the furniture with a decimated defense and a weakened backfield.
The Ravens have delivered a catastrophic match, unable to make up for the chiefs, already in advance of ten points at halftime.
This reverse seals a nightmare start in 1-3 for Baltimore, one of the worst season starts in the Lamar Jackson era. This follows a 41-40 Crève-Coeur defeat against the Bills in week 1, where the Ravens spoiled a 15-point lead, as well as a surprising disappointment 38-30 at home against the Lions in Week 3, with seven conceded sacks.
The problem is not on the side of the attack, but of the defense and the offensive line. And that’s not all. Here is why this departure in 1-3 could end the Hopes of Super Bowl.
Why a departure in 1-3 compromises the chances of the Ravens?
The Ravens now display a 1-3 assessment, their only victory being against the Cleveland Browns, a team with a starry attack, which still scored 17 points. Since 1990, only 35 teams have managed to reach the playoffs after a 1-3 departure, or only 11 %. As for reaching the Super Bowl, it is an even more complex mission.
In the era of the Super Bowl, No team has ever won the title after such a departure. In other words, the chances of the ravens to go to the end are almost zero.
A massacre of injuries
Even before week 4, the Ravens were already deprived of several holders. But Lamar Jackson’s hamstring injury crossed this disastrous start to the season. And things got worse in the face of the chiefs.
The Roquan Smith LineBacker also underwent a muscle injury, while the Marlon Humphrey cornering left the match on calf pain. Nate Wiggin, he was released in the fourth quarter with an elbow injury.
The defense of Baltimore, already ranked last in the league, must now deal without seven holders. The three defensive linemen Nnamdi Madobuike, Travis Jones and Broderick Washington were absent weekdays 4, and OLB Kyle Van Noy missed a second consecutive match due to an ischio-injury injury.
And now ?
The calendar is not more mild: Houston (who stifled Tennessee in week 4) and the Rams await the ravens. Worse, no return period is set to Lamar Jacksonleaving the team in the blur.
The Ravens will imperatively have to raise their defensive level if they want to reconnect with the victory. The offensive line will also have to pull yourself together, she who leaves her quarterback constantly under pressure.
Coach John Harbaugh is faced with crucial decisions. Despite a recognized offensive potential, Baltimore has so far been extremely disappointing.
