Youngster Diego Garavaglia was born and grew up in the metropolis of Milan. In the interview, he reveals how the new addition of basketball Bundesliga club Ratiopharm Ulm (comes from Armani Milano) has prepared his new adventure for his new adventure, when it is difficult to say “no” and why the Ulm fans contributed to his decision.
Diego, can you still remember June 7 of this year?
“I was with my family for the first time at the Orangecampus. Sports director Thorsten Leibenath led us through the fantastic facility. The courts, the gym, the relaxation room – it was simply incredible. What impressed me the most was the atmosphere in the ratiopharm arena. After we looked at the orange campus, we are in game three of the Playoff a half. Fans were very impressed.
Was this special experience crucial for the change?
“Of course, the environment was important for my decision. A lot of people showed me their love and passion for the club on social media. The vision of Ratiopharm Ulm and coach Ty Harrelson convinced me from scratch. The development of players like Ben Saraf, Noa Essengue or Juan Nunez for the organization and for how special this place is.
You were able to collect your first professional shortage for Armani Milan’s Euroleague team. Why is the orange campus the next step in your career?
“I am here to develop in the best possible way. Young players are given the opportunity to prove themselves on the largest possible stage in the Eurocup and the BBL. I am excited to see which steps I can take week after week and where I stand at the end of the season – after that we can talk about the future.”
What does a typical matchday look like?
“This is my first season as a full professional. In the past few years I usually had school before the games. When I was able to gain my first experience with the professional team of Milan, I made sure to be focused on recovering as best as possible – just simple things to be ready later.”
Is there a special meal for you? I mean you are Italians.
“Pasta is the best. Pasta always works, tastes outstanding and you can eat it with various sauces. Every day, whether before the game or after the game – it’s perfect for everything.”
