Why is FC Bruges – Fiorentina played on Wednesday rather than Thursday?

The Conference League semi-final return between Club Brugge and Fiorentina will take place this Wednesday, May 8. A Wednesday, not a Thursday, which is surprising for a Conference League meeting… And it is a tradition more than 700 years old which is the basis of this decision.

Every year, on the occasion of the Ascension, the city of Bruges welcomes tens of thousands of people for the procession of the Holy Blood. A Christian but above all popular celebration, and listed as a UNESCO intangible world heritage site.

It was obviously difficult to imagine for the authorities to manage the influx of people that this event attracts, associated with the numerous supporters who will be present for the extremely important semi-final of the European Cup that Bruges will play. A historic semi-final for a Belgian club, our country had not experienced this since the beginning of the nineties. This is why this meeting is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
