Within 18 hours, the Madrid ATP 1000 tournament lost both Spanish flagships. Carlos Alcaraztournament winner in the “Caja Magica” in 2022 and 2023, failed 6:4, 3:6, 2:6 in the quarterfinals against the Russian Andrei Rublev (ATP 7), who celebrated his best win of the season. Rublew won for the first time in a year and a half against a player from the top 3 in the world rankings.
Immediately after Alcaraz also said goodbye Jannik Sinner from the ATP 1000 tournament. The world number 2 from Italy withdrew on the day off because of one Injury to right hip back. The Canadian Happy Auger-Also reached the semi-finals without a fight. This begins a race against time for Sinner: the home tournament in Rome starts in less than ten days and the French Open in Roland-Garros (from May 26th) in less than a month. (abu/sda)
