Latvian and Estonian Athletes Shine at Jelgava Kayaking and Canoeing Competition

The competition in Jelgava brought together almost 150 athletes from various Latvian and Estonian clubs, as well as one athlete each from Lithuania and Finland. The biggest competition was between young kayakers (born in 2008 and 2009) – more than 30 athletes fought for medals in this group. Competing in different age groups, Jelgava was represented in the competition by kayakers and canoeists from Jelgava Children and Youth Sports School (BJSS), Jelgava Kayaking and Canoeing Sports Club “KC” and Rowing Club “Zemgale”.

“After a break of many years, this year the competition took place around the Post Island. There was a big current in Lielupe, so it was difficult to place the buoys and it was dangerous for the athletes to make a turn around the buoy. Therefore, out of concern for safety, this year the course led around the island of Pasta – the start for everyone was at the rowing base on the island of Pasta, and the course led through Lielupi towards the railway bridge, around the island of Pasta and along Driksa through the channel back to the finish line at the base,” says Maija Actiņa, representative of the competition organizers .

In Jelgava, men and women, juniors and juniors competed for the title of Latvian champion in kayaking and canoeing.

The competition was organized by the Jelgava kayaking and canoeing sports club “KC” in cooperation with the Jelgava municipal institution “Sporta servis centrs” and the Latvian Canoe Federation.
