The 16 teams were divided into two groups of eight teams each. All games in Group A will be played in the Czech capital Prague, while Group B will take place in Ostrava. Germany is part of Group B and has to play against the USA, Sweden, Slovakia, Latvia, France, Kazakhstan and Poland.

Group A includes defending champions Canada, Finland, Switzerland, hosts Czech Republic, Denmark, Norway, Austria and Great Britain.

The tournament begins with the group stage, in which each team plays against each other once. This means that each nation plays seven group games. For every “normal” win you get three points, while wins after extra time or penalty shootouts are worth two points. A defeat after extra time or a penalty shootout at least gives you another point.

After the seven rounds of play, the result of the group phase is set in stone. The best four nations in each group advance to the quarterfinals, the two eighth-placed nations are relegated to Division 1A.

With the start of the quarter-finals the situation becomes clearer. In the knockout system, not only the quarter-finals but also the subsequent semi-finals are played. The final on May 26th will be about the title of 2024 world champion.
