It has been tried again and again in vain for decades. But now it finally comes – the life story of perhaps the best racing driver of all time. Here is the first trailer for the miniseries “Senna,” which will hopefully start soon:

To this day, revered almost like a saint in Brazil and still deeply admired in the rest of the world: Formula 1 driver Ayrton Senna, who died in an accident in 1994, was probably the greatest sports star the South American country has ever produced who did not hit a ball stepped.

Before, but especially after, the release of the brilliantly made, award-winning documentary “Senna” (2010), numerous attempts were made to produce a biopic about the all-too-short life of the gifted racing driver – both in his home country and in Hollywood and Great Britain, where Senna once started his professional career. They all failed for different reasons. Sometimes the financing collapsed, sometimes the right leading actor couldn’t be found or the surviving relatives lodged objections.

Now Netflix Brasil has finally managed to realize such a project. However, this is not in the form of a feature film, but as a miniseries – a format that offers significantly more space to tell the story from his childhood to that fateful day in Imola, Italy. We will hopefully soon be able to check with the streaming service whether this decision actually pays off narratively in the end. The teaser trailer shown at the beginning really whets your appetite, at least visually.

So far there is no specific start date for “Senna” on Netflix. However, the trailer announces that the six-part mini-series will be available to stream worldwide during 2024.

Anyone who wants to pass the time until the series starts by getting to grips with the topic is recommended to watch the already mentioned, excellent documentary “Senna” by “Amy” and “Diego Maradona” director Asif Kapadia. You really don’t have to be a racing fan to be carried away by this work.

These are the cast and creators of “Senna” on Netflix

The creator, producer and co-author of the series is Vicente Amorim (“Yakuza Princess”). The Brazilian also shares directing duties with Júlia Rezende (“And They Say I Am The Crazy One”). Filming took place in and around São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro as well as in Uruguay, Argentina and Great Britain.

In the leading role you can expect Gabriel Leone, who you can currently see on Amazon Prime Video as another tragically injured racing driver, namely Alfonso de Portago in Michael Mann’s “Ferrari”. In addition to Leone, there are also Alice Wegmann (“The Trace We Leave Behind”), Camila Márdila (“The Summer with Mamã”), Arnaud Viard (“Emily in Paris”) as well as “The Gentlemen” and “Maze Runner” Star Kaya Scodelario there.
