The millions from the Club World Cup reinforce the inequality between Boca and River and the rest

It was written about this so many times: that Argentine football was on its way to replicating the hegemony that Real Madrid and Barcelona have in Spain or, a little closer, that it would repeat the Uruguayan model historically carried out by Nacional and Peñarol. Two big ones, two super powerful ones, and then the rest. And little by little, that announcement or that alert becomes effective, it takes its form: although there are exceptions, this is very often happening. It is not something linear, it probably never will be, but it is an incontrovertible reality. The novelty is that, now, or rather from next year, the enormous economic and sporting difference that exists between River and Boca and the other clubs will multiply.

The reason was spread on Tuesday, when Miguel Borja’s goals assured the Núñez club’s qualification for the 2025 Club World Cup, FIFA’s new invention to measure teams from all continents, pour millions of dollars on the clubs, but specially designed and rushed to position the United States before the 2026 World Cup, which that country will organize together with Mexico and Canada.

With those two goals from the Colombian, River advanced to the round of 16 of the Cup and ensured that they earned between 40 and 50 million dollars. Just for participating in the World Cup that will be held between June 15 and July 13, 2025, with a 32-team format, you will receive that amount.

Authoritarians don’t like this

The practice of professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy. That is why it bothers those who believe they are the owners of the truth.

That is to say: River, which had a surplus of 52 million dollars in its last balance sheet, which receives the contribution of 350 thousand active members every month, which rebuilt its stadium until it became the largest in South America, will now earn almost 50 million just for playing that tournament. If the difference in hierarchy is already perceived in each match, that participation will exacerbate it. And from 2025, everything will be more asymmetrical.

To make matters worse, the other Argentine team that is positioned to qualify for that world competition is Boca, the other powerful team in the country. It is true, a series of results must be given for the Xeneize to be classified, but they all seem plausible.

Not counting the last three Libertadores champions, already classified for having lifted the Cup, Boca is in second position in the Conmebol ranking, which gives access to the World Cup: it has 71 points and is only behind River. The problem is that in that ranking points are added through the Libertadores, and Boca does not play it this year. In principle, the two teams that represent the greatest danger to the xeneizes aspirations are Nacional from Uruguay and Talleres de Córdoba. The Uruguayans could pass it if they reach the semifinals of the Libertadores (which they have not reached since 2009) and the Cordobans, if they advance to the final, something that never happened.

Qualifying for the Club World Cup could inject more millions into Boca, a club accustomed to a surplus: according to the latest balance sheet, the positive balance was 14 million dollars. A good part of this economic status is due to the 327 thousand people who pay their social contributions every month.

The distances between River and Boca and the rest are also due to the fact that their historical pursuers fell. Racing, organized in the last decade, does not finish achieving everything it promises in sports. And San Lorenzo and Independiente have been living for a long time amid economic hardships that directly affect the training of their teams. San Lorenzo could leave him out of this World Cup only if he wins the Cup, something that, despite the excitement generated by the victory against Liverpool, seems unlikely.
