The Future of Inside the NBA Uncertain as NBA Broadcast Agreements Shift

The broadcast contract between TNT and the NBA ends at the end of the 2024-2025 season and, in all likelihood, it will not be renewed. This would be the first time that Warner Bros., the parent company of TNT, has lost the broadcast rights to the American Basketball League since 1989, which is an eternity.

The NBA has decided to share its rights between 3 new broadcasters. For now, the deal on the table would entrust the regular season Saturday night games exclusively to Amazon as well as the play-in and a few playoff games including a conference final, all for $1.8 billion per year. ABC/ESPN would keep their current deal, including the Finals, for a total of $2.8 billion and finally NBCnational broadcaster, would win the deal of TNT with 2.5 billion dollars.

If all this comes to fruition, the destiny ofInside The NBA seems inevitable. Some, like Charles Barkley, have already planned the move. At the end of the new deal, he would become free from any contract, with the possibility of joining those who won the prize to continue to present the NBA. The contractual situation of the other 3 remains uncertain, however we know thatErnie Johnson has other duties to assume within the TNT channel. Therefore, if NBC tried to put the quartet back together, it would be quite difficult for them.

Inside the NBA has become such a legendary show and inseparable from the basketball season, that it is difficult to imagine one without them. So many unique moments and a humorous touch that you don’t find in any other sports show. Maybe NBC will try to keep Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley et Kenny Smith while replacing Ernie Johnsonbut whatever happens, we will lose something memorable.

The deal between NBC and the NBA is not yet official, and while the long-term future remains unclear, we still have an entire season of Inside the NBA to enjoy while the show is still around. Even if French-speaking NBA fans would actually be less affected by this disappearance, many of them have seen most of the hilarious scenes with Shaq, Barkley, Kenny and Ernie and will understand that it is an important part of the NBA to which we would say goodbye to.
