The 2023 World Cup in France broke records

Commissioned by the Ministry of Sports, the Ernst and Young (EY) firm carried out a study on the economic, social and environmental impact of the 2023 World Cup, officially presented this Thursday morning. It emerges from this survey, carried out from four questionnaires completed by fifteen thousand people (managers, supporters, volunteers, visitors, viewers, etc.) that during the 51 days of competition, the tenth edition of the 2023 World Cup generated 1.8 billion euros in spending and a net contribution of 871 million euros to the French economy.

12% more licensees in 2023

Half a million visitors – more than two thirds from European territory – stayed an average of ten days in France, generating a total of 1.6 million nights of accommodation, a record for a Rugby World Cup. This World Cup played on ten sites in France recorded nine of the ten highest broadcast audiences on French free channels during the year 2023. Of the 65% of the French population who watched at least one match of this World Cup on television, 40% were doing so for the first time. It should be noted that half of the new spectators were female spectators. For its part, the FFR recorded an increase of 12% in licensees over the year 2023.

The 160,000 direct beneficiaries of social programs (CSR) and the 5,200 jobs created or maintained within the framework of France 2023 mark, it was a stated desire of the organizers, the societal side of this World Cup, without forgetting that the fund The “Rugby au Coeur” endowment has financially supported 210 social development projects directly linked to the practice of rugby to the tune of 1.5 million euros.
