The Absence of Bordeaux’s Football Symbol: Aimé Jacquet Misses 100th Anniversary Match

Among the most beautiful symbols of French football and even more of Bordeaux football, Aimé Jacquet will however be conspicuous by his absence, Tuesday, during the match organized at the Stade Chaban-Delmas for the 100th anniversary of Lescure.

The list of teams announced for the 100th anniversary match at Stade Chaban-Delmas looks (very) great. All the ancient glories of the Girondins will indeed be present or almost. Zinedine Zidane will be there, accompanied, unsurprisingly, by Christophe Dugarry and Bixente Lizarazu, his most loyal teammates in Bordeaux, as well as Yoann Gourcuff, although very discreet since his retirement from the field, or Alain Giresse, Marouane Chamakh, Lilian Laslandes or Pedro Miguel Pauleta.

While Elie Baul and Gernot Rohr will be on the sidelines, other former club legends with scapulars will be present, without their crampons. Marius Tresor and Léonard Specht are thus announced and the name of Laurent Blanc was also mentioned when the match was announced.

Bordeaux’s most successful coach

Two former glories of Bordeaux, however, are missing. Unless there is a good surprise for the spectators expected at Chaban-Delmas this Tuesday, Jean Tigana and Aimé Jacquet will not be there. And if the former member of the Magic Square of the France team has somewhat damaged his image among Girondin supporters by completely failing on the Bordeaux bench during the 2010-11 season, the one who has become a hero for all French people in 1998 is particularly appreciated among Bordeaux fans.

Aimé Jacquet is in fact the most successful coach in the history of the Girondins de Bordeaux. He managed the club for nine seasons (1980 – 1989) and no less than 420 official matches. He allowed Bordeaux to win three French Champion titles in 1984, 1985 and 1987, two French Cups in 1986 and 1987, the Champions Trophy in 1987. And on the European scene, he led the club until semi-final of the 1985 European Champion Clubs’ Cup and in the semi-final of the 1987 European Cup Winners’ Cup.
