The Styrian lost to Ruud after 1:47 hours after a strong first set. The Dane thus maintains the chance of his third victory in Geneva after his successes in 2021 and 2022. Ruud will face number five seed Sebastian Baez from Argentina in the quarterfinals. Ofner, on the other hand, will next attack the French Open, where the draw will take place on Thursday (2 p.m.).

For Ofner, the first set started very badly. The 27-year-old had to give up his first service game and fell behind early on. However, he managed to get a rebreak in the next game, which brought him back into the match. During the first set, Ofner managed another break to which Ruud was unable to provide an answer. After 39 minutes, Ofner won the first set against the number two-seeded Dane.

Ruud too strong

The second set was much more difficult for Ofner. After the brief shock after the first set, Ruud increased the pace. The ÖTV ace conceded two break points early on, of which Ruud was able to convert the second to make it 1:3. Ofner was able to fend off Ruud’s first two set points at the end of the second set, but had to lose the second set 2:6 after 33 minutes.

The third set also didn’t go as desired for Ofner. Although he was able to fend off the first two break points again, he still received a break to make it 1:3. Ofner chased the deficit for the rest of the third set before Ruud converted a break point and his first match point at the same time.
