His journey

Kel’el Ware was born on April 20, 2004 in Sherwood, Arkansas. Thanks to dimensions much larger than his classmates, he dominated pre-university basketball with excess and finished his last year of high school with an average of almost 6 blocks.

A five-star recruit, Ware chose to join the University of Oregon. Nevertheless, his first difficult season was marked by criticism of his work ethic. While the first matches were disappointing, his determination could be singled out and his role diminished as quickly as his playing time. Substitute, his statistics like his efficiency did not live up to expectations in just 15 minutes per evening.

But in 2023-24, Kel’el Ware is heading to Indiana to get a fresh start. In the Big Ten conference, he delivered a high-flying year rewarded by an appearance in the All-Second Team. Holder in his 30 contested matches, Ware has took full advantage of his athletic abilities, blocker (1.9 average) and three-point shooter (42% on a small volume). His minutes were multiplied by 2, everything else followed and more. Most of the concerns from his freshman year have pretty much been erased, and Kel’el Ware’s odds have never been higher than just days before the NBA Draft.

Ses points forts

  • Very good athlete
  • Headband protection
  • Interesting finish
  • Three-point potential

Kel’el Ware is above all a very above average athlete. Beyond his 2m13, the pivot knows how to go about it destroy a hoop and conclude alley-oops. Above the basket, he is an almost constant danger, and his relaxation and his dimensions even surprised in a good way at the Draft Combine.

Added to this is a great range of tools to be effective in the racket, with touch and a recurring use of hook shots. Also a fan of the pick-and-roll, Kel’el Ware is close to 60% shooting success on his 16 points average with a rather interesting finish.

Above all, his great stature makes him one of the best rollbar protectors of the vintage. His almost 2 average blocks last season and his nomination in the All-Defense of his conference bear witness to this, Ware takes up space when he spreads his arms.

But the cherry on the top is his potential as a three-point shooter. If the volume of 1.3 attempts per evening is not gigantic, the success above 42% can be optimistic. Especially since the shooting mechanics are rather clean, and he has shown himself capable of offering a pick-and-pop solution regularly. In the event that his shot develops well, Kel’el Ware could become a very valuable specimen of rim-and-3, pivot capable of protecting a hoop and punishing behind the arc.

Best game of the season for Kel’el Ware in Indiana’s win over Wisconsin. 27 points (11/12 FG), 11 rebounds, 5 blocks for the 19-year-old projected first-round pick, who is playing his best basketball as of late. pic.twitter.com/RlGlo4Uz5X

Its weak points

  • Mentality sometimes questioned
  • Bad throwing skills
  • Difficulties in playmaking
  • Questionable decision making

As soon as he arrives in the NBA, Kel’el Ware’s mentality will be one of the most scrutinized points. The pivot, beyond the antecedents mentioned in his career, is not particularly the quickest to sprint to return to defense or compensate for a delay with his energy. He may sometimes seem less than alert defensively and is far from vocal on the floor. More broadly, his basketball IQ, his determination or his resilience under contact remain areas in which he does not excel.

these motor/effort/awareness issues will be the major swing for kel’el ware’s outlook, especially on defense. too many moments where he fails to impact like he’s capable of

Furthermore, the interior has not yet managed to take good care of the ball. The number of ball losses (1.6) is higher than his assists (1.5), and he did not shine against big defenses who put pressure on him. Despite his honorable average of 16 points per game, Kel’el Ware is not necessarily a go-to-guy that a team will turn to if they need to make a string of baskets.

Finally, his wrong address 63% on free throws can be scary regarding the adaptation of his three-point shot in the NBA. We talk about this in the next section.

What will make the difference

  • Is he a pivot who can stretch in the NBA?

Kel’el Ware has two reassuring points. First, his success in the NCAA with Indiana (42% by far) speaks for itself. Then, its mechanics are rather clean, even on throws where percentages leave something to be desired. The label “pivot that stretches” may hold out its arms to him, but it is difficult to say it without trembling at the moment. Despite the positive signals, Ware will immediately prove that he is a pivot capable of sanctioning in the NBA, even on a low volume at first. If his shooting is not satisfactory, his usefulness on the floor may take a hit. Because given his flaws, he risks becoming just one powerful pivot among others in the big league.

Projection NBA

With his athleticism, touch and hoop protection, Kel’el Ware has a relatively safe floor. While he should not come out of the first round, his dynamic is rather towards anchoring in the top 20. Some insiders are even talking about a potential appearance in the lottery for the pivot of Indiana, who would have impressed by his shooting and explosiveness in pre-draft workouts. If his shooting develops as he wants, Ware could very well establish himself as a valuable starting center in the years to come. But there are still Kel’el gray areas to be clarified.
