Smoke Bombs Halt Football Match at Aube Stadium: ESTAC Condemns Fans’ Actions

While the two teams were tied at 1 goal everywhere as the outcome approached, jets of smoke on the pitch of the Aube stadium led to the definitive cessation of hostilities. The situation then became tense when certain ESTAC players sent the smoke bombs back towards the stand (see video below).

Referee Olivier Thual had stopped the match for the first time, which resumed after around fifteen minutes of interruption, but a new series of smoke bombs pushed him to definitively stop the game, according to television images. Hanging at home by the bottom of the ranking, Troyes would be condemned to relegation to the National two days from the end if it lost this match on the green carpet.

In a press release published after these incidents, ESTAC condemned “the actions of a minority of supporters”. “The context of fan disappointment does not excuse or mitigate this behavior, and we now await decisions from the football authorities.”
