Roland-Garros now plays well covered

DECRYPTION – The installation of a removable roof on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, inaugurated during this 2024 edition, marks the last stage of the modernization work on the legendary enclosure.

The project to extend and modernize the Porte d’Auteuil stadium, imagined in 2011, is coming to an end with the commissioning of the roof on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, which will allow the organizers, after the Philippe-Lenglen court, to Chatrier, to offer matches in case of rain. The 2024 edition will showcase this new setting, built with a view to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and which will also be used for the boxing finals, once the Olympic tennis event is over. With two potentially covered courts, the Parisian Grand Slam is catching up on the other Majors which have moved upmarket in recent years. “In the event of bad weather, this will allow us to shelter 25,000 people on the two main courts. (15,000 on Chatrier and 10,000 on Lenglen), said tournament director Amélie Mauresmo. We will have a little more flexibility in our programming and in the schedule of matches throughout the fortnight.»
