The first big goal of the season has been achieved. Ratiopharm Ulm will take part in this year’s basketball Bundesliga playoffs. The possible quarter-final opponent Würzburg Baskets made sure of that on Sunday. The Lower Franconians won at the Telekom Baskets Bonn 100:91. This means that the Bonn team can no longer overtake Ulm in the table.
The reigning champion had already completed his mandatory task on Saturday. Coach Anton Gavel’s team won at the Kellerkind MLP Academics Heidelberg. It was the sixth win in the last seven games.
This series has meant that Ulm have worked their way up the table. They are in fifth place two games before the end of the main round. Only Rasta Vechta has the chance to catch up with them from behind.
This is so important because there will be play-ins for the first time this Bundesliga season. Only the first six teams qualify directly for the final round. Places seven to ten play for the last two playoff tickets.
Prediction: Series against surprise team
If the champions stay in fifth place, they will most likely have to deal with Würzburg. Coach Sasa Filipovski’s team is considered the surprise of the season and has an MVP candidate in Otis Livingston. But: Ratiopharm Ulm seems to be this opponent. They have won all of their previous games (two in the league, one in the cup) against the Baskets.
Another encouragement: The Ulm team seems to be slowly getting into playoff shape. The only recent defeat was against league leaders and top favorites Bayern Munich. There could be revenge in the final round. As things currently stand, it is quite possible that Ulm will meet Bayern in a potential semi-final – as they did in the cup final in February.
