Svenja Brunckhorst and Sonja Greinacher are faced with a difficult decision. The two German national basketball players can start for two teams at the Olympics – but they have to choose one.

After securing her second Olympic ticket, basketball player Svenja Brunckhorst was simply exhausted. “Physically and mentally” she was “so exhausted” afterwards, reported Brunckhorst. Like her teammate Sonja Greinacher, the 32-year-old has now also qualified in the 3 x 3 for the Olympic Games in Paris this summer (July 26th to August 11th) after successfully qualifying with the national team in February in Brazil. It also feels “very surreal,” said Brunckhorst, who is captain and leader on both teams.

With the final siren she scored the decisive throw to make it 19:17 for the German quartet (Brunckhorst, Greinacher, Marie Reichert and Luana Rodefeld). “This is indescribable for women’s basketball in Germany. 3×3 is such a small start-up. “It’s still in its early stages and we’re there,” said Brunckhorst, who is also a commentator for the streaming channel Dyn (like WELT, belongs to Axel-Springer SE). “It couldn’t be put into words,” she said of the significance of the success.

New Olympic outfits – “We’ve seen far worse things”

In Paris, Adidas presented the athletes’ outfits for the Olympic Games. The German Olympians wear black and white outfits with yellow accents. Inga Griese, editor of ICON, doesn’t think the clothes are particularly chic: “Of course we’re never the most sophisticated people in the world.”

The qualifications of Brunckhorst and Greinacher in the booming discipline now cause a curiosity. The duo has to decide which competition they want to take part in at the Olympics. “It would work both ways, but logistically and in terms of time it’s not quite possible,” said Brunckhorst. This is mainly because the preliminary round of the basketball tournament is held in Lille and not in Paris like most other sports.

“My brain doesn’t say anything yet”

There should be discussions with the association and a decision is expected soon. Brunckhorst cannot imagine that the two players would choose different teams. “We are such a duo, we are best friends and have been traveling together for many years. I think it will be a mutual decision for both of us,” she said.

She never thought that this decision would “demand so much” of her. My heart says fifty-fifty, my brain says nothing yet. I have to let everything sink in,” she told BILD: “Hopefully I’ll be clearer in the next few days.” The only thing that’s out of the question for her for now is that she competes in both disciplines, she told the paper: “I am one Perfectionist, wants to do something to the fullest. If I did both, it wouldn’t be like this. This option is excluded. It’s important to decide on something and then stand behind it.”

The tendency is towards the 3×3 competition because the chances of winning a medal are greater there. In addition to the women’s national team and the 3×3 women, the basketball world champions led by captain Dennis Schröder are also qualified for the Olympics.
