PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – New life for the Borgo Nuovo heavy athletics gym. After years of abandonment, thanks to an agreement signed between the municipal administration and the Italian judo, wrestling, karate and martial arts federation, the Largo Partinico structure will be transformed into a sports center of national importance where both competitive practice and activities of social interest with free courses for the most vulnerable citizens. The green light for the concession of the gym arrived yesterday evening (24 May) with the approval of a council resolution signed by the sports councilor Alessandro Anello. The relations between the Municipality and Fijlkam, chaired by Domenico Falcone, will be regulated by an agreement. The general agreement was reached in January on the initiative of councilor Anello in the presence of mayor Lagalla, president Randazzo and CONI represented by Fabio Gioia.
The keys are expected to be delivered next week. “The agreement – explains councilor Anello – commits the federation to establishing a federal technical center with the presence of qualified teachers and the necessary equipment to carry out the various disciplines. The rooms will be equipped with mats for judo, karate and wrestling, barbells for the weight room, furnishings for the changing rooms and a semi-automatic defibrillator. Work will also be carried out on the windows to install grates to protect the gym. The costs for equipment, staff, ordinary maintenance, utilities and insurance will be borne by the federation. Fijlkam will guarantee the practice of federal sports disciplines both to members, affiliated companies or bodies, and to citizens who request it, establishing days and times of activities. Some time slots will be reserved, in agreement with the municipal administration, for associations and bodies that take care of the most fragile, disabled or destitute citizens. “The use of the gym will be for all Palermitans – specifies councilor Anello – but first of all we aim to involve the youngest groups of the fifth district which has over 100 thousand residents. We plan free courses in gymnastics, self-defence and paralympic activities, open also to the schools in the neighborhood.
