Machado drives in three in Padres’ victory over Reds

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Yu Darvish earned his first win of the season, going five scoreless innings after emerging from the injured list, and the San Diego Padres beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-4 on Thursday .

Dominican Manny Machado hit a three-run double for San Diego, which ended a five-game losing streak.

Darvish (1-1) was in control during his outing, allowing three hits, walking none and striking out three.

San Diego improved to 7-12 at home.

The Padres scored four times in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. The attack was capped by a double by Machado with the bases loaded, and with no outs against starter Nick Martínez (0-2), who pitched for San Diego in the previous two seasons.

The Padres’ first run came in the third inning, when Jake Cronenworth singled in Fernando Tatis Jr., who had reached base with a double.

For the Reds, the Dominicans Elly de la Cruz 4-1 with one run scored, Santiago Espinal 4-0, Jeimer Candelario 4-2 with one run scored and one RBI.

For the Padres, Venezuelan José Azocar 1-1. The Dominicans Tatis 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI, Machado for 1-for-5 with one run scored and three RBIs.
