The German national basketball team is losing the architect of its World Cup triumph: Gordon Herbert will leave the German Basketball Association after the Olympic Games. Captain Dennis Schröder was surprised and criticized the association’s communication policy.

The German Basketball Association (DBB) confirmed the early departure of the national coach on Wednesday (May 15, 2024). Herbert, who sensationally led captain Dennis Schröder’s team to the World Cup title in 2023, is leaving his contract until 2025 early.

DBB President Weiss: “Don’t put any obstacles in his way”

“The great successes of the DBB men and the associated huge public recognition are forever linked to the person of Gordon Herbert,” said DBB President Ingo Weiss: “We would like to thank him very much for that. We have great understanding for that “Gordie wants to devote himself to another task after the Olympic Games and we are not putting any obstacles in his way.”

Olympics as a conclusion

Herbert was appointed Henrik Rödl’s successor in September 2021. In 2022, the DBB team also won the bronze medal at the home European Championships under his leadership. It is not yet known who will be the Canadian’s successor.

“It was an incredible experience and an honor to coach the German men’s national team,” said Herbert, adding: “The trip was the ultimate life moment for me.” He is now looking forward to “the last part, the last challenge of our three-year plan, the 2024 Olympic Games.”

Captain Schröder surprised by Herbert’s decision

The decision was “very sad,” said Captain Dennis Schröder to the “Braunschweiger Zeitung”. “I haven’t spoken to the team yet, but I think every single one will be grieving,” the NBA star added. Schröder told dpa that he was surprised by the decision. Herbert called him two days earlier and told him that it had been decided that way.

The NBA professional from the Brooklyn Nets was quite critical of the association’s communication policy: “I think it’s a shame that the national team doesn’t come to me and talk about it. I don’t think anyone on our team knew that. And I think with the captain Of course it should also be spoken about so that I can update my boys too.”

After the World Cup coup last year, there were many job offers for Herbert. The French Euroleague club Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne was already interested in him last fall. The world champion maker was interested, but no agreement was reached.
