Leverkusen on Track to Become First Undefeated Bundesliga Champion after 50 Consecutive Wins

The 5-0 gala in Bochum makes it clear: Leverkusen has been unbeaten in 50 competitive games and can now become the first undefeated Bundesliga champion team.

Coach Xabi Alonso (42): “We can achieve a very nice goal. It would be great if we won the championship trophy without defeat. This has never happened before.”

And because the Leverkusen team is so good this season, the DFL now comes into play: Would the league association award a gold bowl or another honorary award if champions Leverkusen remained undefeated against Augsburg on the last matchday?

When asked by BILD, the DFL did not want to comment on this on Monday morning.

But BILD knows what will happen next with the master issue.

After the Augsburg game, DFL managing directors Marc Lenz and Steffen Merkel presented the championship trophy to Leverkusen’s captain Lukas Hradecky (34). The bowl will be awarded to Bayer 04 over the summer and the original will be returned to the league at the start of the season. Leverkusen receives a replica in return.

A special trophy has not yet been made. There will be no spontaneous special honor on Saturday.

Is the DFL thinking about an honorary award?

The DFL will wait for the last game and then have to make a fundamental decision that would also apply in the future: Will an undefeated champion be particularly honored or will everything remain as usual?

So far this has not been enshrined in the statutes. It would be a precedent that the DFL would have to decide on.

When could there be a special honor for Leverkusen?

There are two dates available for this: the DFL Supercup on August 17th (location open/possible opponents are Kaiserslautern, Bavaria, Stuttgart) or the opening matchday of the 2024/25 season.

But now Bayer has the championship trophy – and Robert Andrich (29) is really looking forward to it: “You only saw it on TV, you dreamed it as a little boy. When the moment comes, it will be very special.”
