Cleveland Cavaliers Part Ways with Coach JB Bickerstaff Following Playoff Exit

Cleveland announced Thursday that it had parted ways with coach JB Bickerstaff, a week after the Cavaliers were eliminated in the semifinals of the NBA Eastern Conference by Boston. “Those kinds of decisions are never easy to make, especially when you remember where the rebuilding of this franchise started under his leadership,” Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman said of Bickerstaff, in position since February 2020.

For his fifth season in Cleveland, Bickerstaff led the Cavs to fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 48 wins and 34 losses during the regular season. In the Conference semi-finals, the Cavaliers, deprived in particular during the last two matches of their star leader Donovan Mitchell, were dismissed by the Boston Celtics, winners of the series 4-1.

Bickerstaff was named assistant to Cavs head coach John Beilein in 2019, before taking over from him the following year while the team was in the process of rebuilding. He has an overall record of 170-159 with Cleveland.
