Flyers Goalie Banned from International Competitions for 3 Years

The good news for the Flyers and Fedotov is that this saga is virtually over, especially given Fedotov signed a two-year, .55 million contract extension on April 23.

If Fedotov chooses to leave the Flyers and play for another club under the IIHF’s jurisdiction, he will be prohibited from playing at the club level for a period of six months. This is due to his two-year contract with CSKA, which he signed in the previous summer and has played for this season.

For now, Fedotov will have the chance to start his NHL journey and fully adjust to the league. Fedotov officially joined the Flyers on March 28, immediately after his KHL contract with CSKA was ended, and was able to make appearances in multiple NHL games before the season concluded.

CSKA will face a two-year restriction on conducting international transfers from August 11, 2024 to August 10, 2026. The International Ice Hockey Federation has also imposed a fine of 1 million Swiss francs on the Russian Ice Hockey Federation for its involvement in the situation.

On Saturday, the IIHF stated that sanctions will be given to Ivan Fedotov of the Philadelphia Flyers, his previous team CSKA Moskva, and the Russian Ice Hockey Federation for not honoring Fedotov’s legally binding contract with the Flyers from last season.

Fedotov’s results with the Flyers were mixed: the 27-year-old was strong in relief of incumbent starter Sam Ersson against the Islanders on April 1, despite losing in overtime. Four days later, on April 5, Fedotov made his first NHL start against the Buffalo Sabres but allowed four goals on only 19 shots against. He also appeared in relief against the Montreal Canadiens on April 9 and allowed four goals on 13 shots in a futile bullpen effort.

The IIHF has also prohibited Fedotov from participating in any IIHF events for a duration of three years. The Federation specifically mentioned in their press statement that this ruling also applies to the Olympic Games.

The meaning of this is currently unclear, as Russia has been prohibited from participating in various international sports events due to their illegal involvement in the conflict and aggression towards Ukraine.

In May 2022, Fedotov, who is 27 years old, initially joined the Flyers by signing an entry-level contract. However, he never made it to the team as he was arrested on July 1, 2022, for allegedly avoiding military service. He was then hospitalized for stress-induced gastritis and eventually enrolled in the Russian navy.
