Twenty-four hours after Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, hit in the hip, also withdrew from the Masters 1000 in Rome, with death in his soul. Three weeks before Roland-Garros, the Italian player does not want to take any risks.

Fans were impatiently awaiting him to celebrate with him a sublime start to the season, marked by a first Grand Slam victory, at the Australian Open. But Jannik Sinner will not play the Masters 1000 in Rome. Hit in the hip, the 22-year-old does not want to take any risks three weeks before Roland-Garros and announced his withdrawal this Saturday, two days before the draw, via his social networks. “It is not easy to write this message, but after speaking again with the doctors and specialists about my hip problems, I have to announce that unfortunately I will not be able to play in Rome. I’m obviously very sad that I won’t be able to recover, because it’s one of my favorite tournaments. I couldn’t wait to come back and play at home in front of the Italian crowd. I will come to Rome for a few days anyway and I will be at the Foro Italico. Thank you for your messages of support which I greatly appreciate! Now I will work with my team and the doctors to be ready for Roland Garros,” writes the world No. 2.

Only two defeats for Sinner in 2024

In the space of 24 hours, the Roman tournament has just lost two headliners, since Carlos Alcaraz, injured in the arm, also withdrew. Unless there is a last minute withdrawal, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal will be there, which should delight the Italian public. Eighth finalist last year in Rome (defeat against Francisco Cerundolo), Jannik Sinner seems to be paying for his excellent start to the season, which saw him win sixteen matches in a row and only lose two matches, against Carlos Alcaraz in Indian Wells and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo. In Madrid, the young Italian complained about his hip during his round of 16 against Pavel Kotov, but seemed to be better during his eighth against Karen Khachanov, before finally withdrawing before his quarter against Felix Auger-Aliassime. Like Alcaraz, Sinner should not play a tournament before going to Porte d’Auteuil, where he was eliminated in the second round last year. If his package despairs Italian tennis fans, he does, however, make one happy: the Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, who will not need to take part in the qualifications and enters directly into the table.
