“Geology, champion! Geology, champion…” On the afternoon of May 21, at the entrance of Hunan Geology Middle School, a group of middle school students in school uniforms held fireworks sticks and were full of expectations. On the same day, the men’s basketball team of Hunan Geology Middle School returned home with great honors, winning the Nike China High School Basketball League National Finals for the first time.

In the final on the evening of May 19, the Hunan Provincial Geological Middle School men’s basketball team defeated the Qingdao No. 67 Middle School men’s basketball team 86:66, setting a new record for the best record in the history of Hunan Provincial Middle School men’s basketball team participating in national competitions.

In recent years, Hunan Middle School sports have flourished in many aspects and have won national championships many times. What kind of growth stories do students have? What has sports brought them? Why are Hunan Middle School sports so strong? The reporter conducted an in-depth interview.

The “Wolf Nature” team welcomes the “basket” and creates history

On the evening of May 19, the youngsters who held the national championship trophy for the first time roared with excitement, and their tears fell along with their anxious hearts. This time, they really did it!

“It is said that it takes ten years to sharpen a sword. We have fought for 20 years for this national championship. It is not easy at all.” Recalling the moment of winning the championship, Hunan Geological Middle School men’s basketball head coach Peng Zhiqiang was filled with emotion.

In the first semi-final, Hunan Geological Middle School was nearly defeated by Jilin Experimental Middle School after leading by nearly 30 points. “We were all very nervous at that time, and our hands were weak,” said captain Zhang Wenjie. After communicating with the players, everyone calmed down, worked together to do a good job of defense, and worked hard to score, and finally reaped the fruits of victory. In the subsequent final, they were in high spirits and won the championship by a large margin.

“Our men’s basketball team logo is a leaping wolf. The wolf is a team animal. These children are very united on the court.” Peng Zhiqiang told reporters that based on the characteristics of the players, he determined the unique style of “small, quick, steady, accurate and ruthless” , in daily training, the technical and tactical requirements for each player are very high, “can fight alone, but also can fight together.”

“It’s no accident that the Geological Middle School men’s basketball team won the championship.” Li Liang, the party secretary of the school, witnessed the whole process of the team’s championship. He stayed at the stadium and kept cheering for everyone. After the road to the championship was reported by various media, the “Geological Middle School” became an “Internet celebrity” for a while. In his opinion, such an achievement is the result of the school’s determination to follow the path of characteristic development and the team’s long-term persistence and hard work. The school has always attached great importance to the development of sports, and has formed a distinctive traditional sports school-running feature represented by basketball and martial arts.

The school also requires that if students want to play ball, they must first do a good job in cultural studies. If the cultural studies are not up to standard, training may even be suspended. Even when participating in competitions, they are required to bring books and complete learning tasks outside of the competition.

At present, senior high school players such as Zhang Wenjie and Huang Tanjun have already obtained admission tickets to Huazhong University of Science and Technology in advance.

These projects have also won many awards.

In addition to the Geology men’s basketball team, Changsha Mingde Middle School’s Taekwondo team also won many heavyweight honors.

“I started learning Taekwondo when I was in the fourth or fifth grade, and I still spend 3 to 4 hours training every day.” Tang Xintingting, a sophomore at Mingde Middle School, said that the heavy workload and the hard training often overwhelmed her. “Although I feel very tired, I still grit my teeth and persevere for my dream.”

This persistence lasted for 6 years. In the past 6 years, Tang Xintingting has won many awards, including first place in the 52kg women’s group of the National Middle School Taekwondo Competition, fifth place in the World Middle School Taekwondo Trials and other major honors.

“Without sports, there is no morality; without sports, there is no youth.” In recent years, Changsha Mingde Middle School has insisted on using sports to cultivate people and integrate the five aspects of education. Relying on physical education classes, sunshine hours, special large-scale recess activities, etc., it has carried out sports such as running exercises, badminton, table tennis, basketball, and football. In particular, Taekwondo has been carried out in a lively manner, with a total of 52 first-level athletes and 32 second-level athletes trained, and the total team score ranks among the top three in the country.

As a national-level youth campus volleyball specialty school, Hengyang No. 8 Middle School has also “won many awards” in volleyball competitions, and has been ranked in the top three in Hunan Province’s middle school and youth volleyball competitions for 17 consecutive years. In the 19th China Middle School Volleyball League held in 2023, the school’s volleyball team advanced to the top 16 with a record of 6 2:0 shutouts, and then defeated the runner-up and third place of the previous session, and finally won the third place, setting the best record for middle school students in Hunan Province participating in this event.

In recent years, the school has accelerated the implementation of the “sports and education integration” plan by building volleyball as a specialty project. In addition to volleyball, the school’s other sports have also blossomed. In the 2023 Hunan Youth Badminton Championships, Tennis Championships, Track and Field Championships, and the 5th Hunan Provincial Games Football Group A Competition, the school achieved excellent results of 4 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals.

Combining popularization and improvement to promote the development of school sports characteristics

How strong are the sports in Hunan middle schools? A set of data can prove it: the Hunan campus group delegation participated in the first National Student (Youth) Games and ranked sixth in the country and first among the central and western provinces; Changsha Yali Middle School women’s basketball team won the East Asian Youth Games Women’s U18 Basketball Championship, and the men’s football team won the China Football School Cup Men’s Group A U18 Championship; Changsha Nan Ya Middle School women’s football team won the National Five-a-side Football Youth Championship…

Why is it so strong? The reporter learned from the Provincial Department of Education that our province has built a campus cultural and sports activity mechanism from the top-level design, in which everyone participates, every class has a team, every school has a competition, and every level has measures. We have long insisted on combining popularization with improvement to promote the development of school sports characteristics, allowing each school to carry out popular sports activities according to local conditions, and allowing a number of sports characteristic schools to receive all-round support and continue to grow in strength.

At present, the province has established a number of traditional sports schools such as 1,546 national football schools, 300 national basketball schools, and 50 national volleyball schools, as well as martial arts, swimming, hip-hop (cheerleading), wrestling, judo, and taekwondo. A number of pilot schools for the integration of sports and education have cultivated fertile soil for campus sports education.

Taking football as an example, the province has established 18 provincial-level youth campus football pilot counties and cities and 25 higher-level high school football team construction bases. Since 2015, campus football training classes have been held to train a total of 13,439 people. Every year, we also organize youth campus football summer camps across the province, as well as football leagues for junior high school students, high school students and college students, and form teams to participate in national youth campus football competitions, allowing football enthusiasts to grow up on a broad competitive stage.

At the same time, in order to smooth the selection and further education channels for students with sports specialties, most cities and states in the province have established a selection and training mechanism for students with sports specialties. Competitive sports reserve talent training institutions can select competitive sports reserve talents within the city and state in accordance with regulations; The school cooperates with primary schools, junior high schools, and high schools in the area to form a corresponding admission unit, forming a “one-stop” training model to allow students with sports talents to develop better.

“The long-term popularization of campus sports has cultivated more high-level athletes, and the continuous emergence of high-level sports teams has promoted the wider development of campus sports.” A relevant person in charge of the Provincial Department of Education said that the next step will be to take more pragmatic measures and more powerful actions to enable schools to teach physical education, a “compulsory course”, well and allow students to shine with confidence on the sports field.
