French Open: Misolic in major main draw for the first time

Filip Misolic qualified for the French Open in Paris on Friday, making it his first Grand Slam tournament. The 22-year-old Styrian defeated Frenchman Quentin Halys 2:6 6:4 6:3 in the third round of qualifying. Misolic will find out who his first-round opponent will be on Friday after the qualifiers have been drawn.

Misolic reached the third and final round of eliminations for the first time in his eighth attempt at one of the four majors. In the first qualifying round, the world number 241 defeated the Japanese Sho Shimabukuro, and in the second round against the Frenchman Ugo Blanchet.

In the decisive third round against Halys (ATP-187th), Misolic lost the first set 2:6, but was able to turn the game around afterwards. In the second set, he managed the decisive break to make it 2:1. In the third set, Misolic broke local hero Halys’ serve to make it 2:0 and then served out to win. After 2:09 hours of play, the Styrian converted his second match point.

This means that two Austrians are represented in the singles main draw: Austria’s number one, Sebastian Ofner, who will face Frenchman Terence Atmane in the opening match of the second major of the year, which begins on Sunday. There are no Austrians in the women’s singles.
