Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria was knocked out in the first round of the French Open in Paris. The German number one was clearly defeated by the Dane Clara Tauson 2:6, 3:6. Jule Niemeier, Laura Siegemund and Eva Lys also suffered an early exit on a black Sunday.

For Maria, number 65 in the world rankings, a black streak continued against Tauson, who is seven places behind her. The 36-year-old has never made it further than the second round at Roland Garros. After her 6-0, 2-6, 4-6 win against Wang Xinyu (China), Niemeier is still waiting for her first main round victory in Paris.

Previously, world-class doubles player Siegemund had lost to former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin (USA) 6:4, 2:6, 2:6 after a good start. “I managed to close the first set, but then it didn’t work out,” said Siegemund, who reached the quarterfinals in the French capital in 2020.

Meanwhile, qualifier Eva Lys missed a surprise against Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, losing 6:4, 5:7, 2:6. The Hamburg native led 4:3 in the second set against Garcia, seeded number 21, but it was not enough to win.

Of the German women, only Angelique Kerber (Kiel) and Tamara Korpatsch (Hamburg) are still in the tournament.
