Europa League: Bayer Leverkusen loses Europa League final against Atalanta Bergamo

Bayer 04 Leverkusen lost 3-0 to Atalanta Bergamo from Italy in the Europa League final in Dublin. Bayer 04 thus missed the chance of a triple of the German championship, Europa League and DFB Cup.

Leverkusen’s winning streak of 51 consecutive games without defeat has now been broken. They also missed out on a second international title after the 1988 UEFA Cup. On Saturday, Leverkusen still have a chance to win the double in the DFB Cup final against 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

It is Atalanta’s first international title. Former Leipzig player Ademola Lookman scored all three goals (12th, 26th and 75th minute).

“It’s extremely bitter, but we have to be honest, it was deserved,” said national player Robert Andrich to broadcaster RTL after the game. “If you concede three goals but don’t score one, it’s deserved. It wasn’t enough today, especially in attack,” he continued.

Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso prevented Leverkusen from having a chance in the 18th minute by intercepting a shot from Josip Stanišić. Bayer did not have any further opportunities at first, however. It was only after about an hour that the action increasingly took place around Atalanta’s penalty area. But Bergamo remained dangerous and there was no time to catch up.
