Emotional Farewell: Vechta Coach Ty Harrelson Thankful as Team Faces Summer Break

Vechta is out. With the 84:67, Chemnitz took their third win in four games. And thus sent the Lower Saxony team into the basketball summer break. After that, things got very emotional.

After the defeat, Vechta’s coach Ty Harrelson (43), who is moving to Ulm, was unstoppable. When Dyn reporter Arne Malsch asked him about his feelings in an interview, the American had to swallow: “Now you’ve caught me.” His eyes shone and filled with tears.

Harrelson was deeply touched: “I’m just grateful. I’m happy to be in this position. I left the US to come to Germany. I was looking for a job and I was happy to get a job here.”

His voice breaks. Harrelson repeatedly wipes the tears from his face. The emotions keep overwhelming him. “There is no crying in basketball,” he says into the Dyn microphone, trying to keep his composure.

Harrelson made a name for himself as a player in the 2nd division in the 2000s, playing for a total of five years in Langen, Bayreuth and Osnabrück.

“It’s a bit sad to hear the song here one last time, to feel the crowd here one last time. I have so many good memories here, even though it was only two seasons as coach,” the coach continued.

The Texan-born player led Rasta into the Bundesliga last season as second division champions and then sensationally reached the playoffs.

Harrelson: “I don’t know what else to say”

“I gave it my all,” he explains his feelings. “And of course I took a risk when I came back. But I loved playing here, I love the country, the culture. And I’m grateful for how I was welcomed. I don’t know what else to say except thank you.”

What an emotional departure. Many Rasta fans shed a few tears. Harrelson’s successor will be Martin Schiller. It will certainly not be an easy legacy for the Austrian to replace the emotional and successful Texan.
