LONDON (AP) — Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem intends to retire at the end of the year as he has struggled to regain his level of play following a wrist injury.
“I’m going to end my career at the end of the season,” Thiem said in a video posted Friday on Instagram, calling it “very sad, but also a beautiful message.”
The 30-year-old Austrian won his only Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows in 2020. His five-set victory over Alexander Zverev made Thiem the first man in the last 71 years to come back from being down two sets in the final. of the US Open.
He was also a finalist in three Grand Slams: At the 2018 and 2019 French Open, as well as the 2020 Australian Open.
His best position was third in the world rankings in 2020. He remained among the top five until a wrist injury in June 2021 left him out for nine months. Since then his game has been affected.
Thiem said the reason for his retirement is that his wrist “is not exactly where it should be.”
“The second reason is my internal sensations,” he added. “I have thought about this decision for a long time.”
Thiem has a total of 17 titles in his career.
