Daria Kasatkina would travel to Saudi Arabia without any worries if she took part in the WTA Finals.

The controversial push by the Saudi investment fund PIF onto the tennis tour has been completed and will expand over the years. By hosting the WTA Finals in Riyadh at the end of the year, the Saudi kingdom has secured one of the biggest tournaments on the women’s tour. An award that has been met with criticism, the handling of women’s rights in the desert state is anything but praiseworthy by Western standards.

For Daria Kasatkina, however, there were completely different problems because the Russian woman had publicly acknowledged her homosexuality. This will be prosecuted in Saudi Arabia. However, Kasatkina has now told the BBC that her concerns have disappeared. “I was guaranteed that I would be fine,” reported the 26-year-old. She wouldn’t have to behave any differently than in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, for example.

Economic goals predominate

There is great hope that the Saudi state will further open up and improve human rights. However, there are still doubts that a change is imminent on the part of the state in order to gain more acceptance in the world. Ultimately, the PIF and thus Saudi Arabia itself are concerned with economic goals.
