Customizing Your Cobalt Katar Heirloom in Apex Legends Season 21

Apex Legends’ Heirlooms represent each Legend’s personality and fighting style through an exclusive melee weapon. However, in Season 21, players will receive their own unique weapon that they can customize to their personal preferences.

The official Apex Legends Season 21 blog post reveals all of the new features being added this month, including a separate article on the recently released Apex Artifacts as well as the new universal customization options for the previously released mythical melee weapon Cobalt Katar.

Artifact Katar Heirloom becomes customizable in Apex Legends

The first artifact weapon, the Cobalt Qatar, was released during the Shadow Society Collection Event as a potential random drop from all event packs and was the first permanent cross-character Heirloom in Apex that could be equipped by any Legend. Previously, the Buster Sword R5 from the Final Fantasy Rebirth takeover event was also a universal heirloom, but could only be collected for the duration of the collaboration and is now completely uncollectible.

With the start of Season 21, the Cobalt Qatar can be further customized from its base state, with five unlock lanes containing five items each: Qatar Base, Theme, Energy Source, Activation Emote, and Deathbox. However, players are not tied to a specific Qatar track when choosing which version they want to take with them into the outside world. They can mix and match their favorite components from each reward track, creating over 200 unique combinations. Players who have already unlocked the Cobalt Qatar in Shadow Society will automatically unlock the first four Qatar upgrades in the Cobalt Customization Track when they log into Apex for the first time in Season 21.

Much fuss about the Heirloom changes

Additionally, players who collect all five variants of a Qatar component will be rewarded with the Nitride variant, a secret sixth reward track. For example, if you unlock all five standard Qatar bases, you will receive the Nitride base, which is interchangeable with all previous Qatar components. To unlock each upgrade component, players will need to spend Exotic Shards, a new premium currency that is different from the regular Heirloom Shards. Exotic Shards can be purchased in the in-game shop just like Apex Coins, and will also be included as earnable rewards in future events and the Season 21 Battle Pass, which will have 10 Exotic Shards on its way.

So far, Respawn has not revealed how much each upgrade component will cost or whether the Deathbox will cost additional Exotic Shards at the end of each variant series. But players will be able to see for themselves when Upheaval launches on all platforms on May 7th.
